My Publishing Journey Part 1

I’m going to break this up into pieces for several reasons.

One: I have yet to reach the end of my publishing journey, so I cannot give you the ending.

Two: There’s a lot to unpack on this journey and unless you’re reading a novel, I doubt you want thousands of words at once that are just about me and how I made it to the point where I am now.

Three: It’s going to take a lot of time to write down the last several years of trial and error, heartbreak and success.

Let’s get to the story.

In October of 2015 I prepared to leave my ten-year career as a medical assistant. I’d already shifted to part time and turned in my two week notice. My husband and I were excited. After ten years of praying, I was finally going to become a stay-at-home mom.

Days later, my husband lost his job.

It was too late for me to redact my decision, and we both ended up at home.

Jobless.

You might think the story ends there, but this is only the beginning.

You know how every character has a backstory? This is mine.

Three years we struggled to pay our bills. Three years of worry and prayer as we shuffled through jobs that never lasted. We budgeted and learned how to do without everything but the bare necessities. I won’t recount every loss and heartache of those years. That is not my purpose here.

During those years, I poured every ounce of spare energy into writing. I wrote several books (many that are still on my hard drive waiting to be edited) and I worked non-stop in hopes that we’d keep treading water.

It didn’t work.

One more missed payment and we’d lose our house. We were at the point where everything seemed to be falling apart.

God had plans for us. We didn’t know what they were, but we held onto that tenuous hope with all our strength.
